Congresswoman Adams Wants to Meet You!
Read on for upcoming deadlines to save on internet fees and more...
As we begin Black History Month, we must stay vigilant in the fight to make all parts of American history known to citizens. Throughout February, we pay tribute to the countless contributions of African-Americans who have helped to weave the fabric of this great nation. We also acknowledge that these and other stories should be told all year long, because Black History is American History.
Happy Black History Month!
Back to Washington!
This week, I traveled back to Washington to vote on important legislation and work on your behalf. I met with many constituent groups, including North Carolina District Attorneys and the North Carolina Black Nurses Association. I also had the opportunity to speak to the National Federation of the Blind about the importance of protections for Americans with disabilities.
H.R.7024 - Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024
After careful consideration, I chose to vote in favor of the Child Tax Credit expansion negotiated by Senator Ron Wyden and Congressman Jason Smith.
This legislation will help millions more parents keep and spend more of their hard-earned dollars on their children. That will improve children’s health, keep clothes on their back and food in their bellies. It will help more parents return to the workforce and further grow our economy. This expansion alone – while not enough – will lift 400,000 children out of poverty, 30,000 in my district alone, and benefit 16 million kids overall. Further, this legislation expands the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit, which will help 200,000 families keep or find homes. I cannot deny North Carolina families a step forward and for that alone, I had to vote yes.
I remain committed to renewing a true American Benefit for Children like we passed in the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), a revolutionary policy that cut child poverty nearly in half, brought parents back into the workforce, and for a short period, acknowledged the dignity and humanity of parenthood in America. I consider this legislation a down payment toward that goal, one for which we were extorted to give more tax breaks to billion-dollar corporations. Between the poorest American families and billion dollar corporations, whom do we think needs tax relief more?
I will celebrate giving families some breathing room today, and then tomorrow I will join my colleagues in renewing the fight for the full ARPA Child Tax Credit. Nothing less should divert our efforts or settle our spirits.
State of the District 2024 Recap
Last week, I had the opportunity to address your concerns during my annual State of the District Address. I always enjoy talking about the work I do here in Washington, because my number one priority is supporting policies and fighting for changes that improve the lives of my constituents. Thank you to everyone who came out!
Congressional Award Ceremony
Last month, I had the opportunity to recognize some of the incredible young people doing amazing things in the 12th district.
Two residents, Joseph Domm and Teresa Fleming, completed the Congressional Award Program which was established by Congress to provide opportunities for young people to unleash their potential by achieving personal goals focused on volunteerism, character development, and fitness.
We also honored our 12th District Congressional App Challenge Winner, Srinithi Mohan, who is a co-creator of the app Policy Pro. The Congressional App Challenge allows students to compete against their peers by creating an app of their choice for mobile, tablet, or computer devices.
Congrats to Joseph, Teresa, and Srinithi!
The Affordable Connectivity Program will stop accepting new applications and enrollments on February 7, 2024. Consumers must be approved and enrolled with a service provider 11:59 p.m. ET on February 7 to receive the ACP benefit. Barring Congressional action to fund ACP, funding for America's largest broadband affordability program is expected to last through April 2024.
2024 Congressional Arts Competition Now Open
Our office is now accepting submissions for the 2024 Congressional Art Competition from high school students who live in or attend school in North Carolina's 12th Congressional District.
Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.
Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries. Winners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC. The winning works are displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol.
The deadline for submissions is May 1.
Come join my staff and I for a Cup of Joe at our Carolina Coffee!
My office is your office. My staff is here to assist you and hosts office hours throughout the district to meet with constituents in person about issues such as social security, visa, passports, Veterans Affairs, Medicaid and more. That’s where I’ll lay my hat for this week. Thanks for reading!
Sincerely,
Alma
